| There are two components to Maths learning: firstly the maths lesson where new concepts are explained and practiced. If you are home educating, cover these with Lifepac, Saxon or Horizons. The other component is arithmetic drill. Drill is patiently building skill from mere familiarity (ie. start at age 10) to speed & accuracy. Drill should not be "sergeant-major" style verbal abuse! Children will love it if you do it 5 min/day, patiently! Even easier, play the various maths songs in the car, during c hores, or at bed-time. Most board games give practice in arithmetic too. |

| Incremental Maths
The following two Maths programs use an innovative and highly successful layout called "Incremental Development". Instead of teaching one topic of maths (eg algebra, geometry, measurement) at a time, for 3-4 weeks, then testing it and moving on to the next topic, they teach just one tiny portion of that topic on a given day (Is 28:10), explain it very clearly, step by step with fully worked examples. Then the students try one or two: learning by doing, not just listening. Then the main part of the lesson is spent practising a mix of many taught topics. As the weeks unfold new topics are introduced, clearly explained, and then practised daily. Testing is also regular, to ensure independence and accountability. |

Horizons is teacher-led, hands-on, incremental style. Every lesson contains concepts being introduced, developed, and concluded while others are in recess. Children learn very fast and don't seem to forget! Each year's work is in two Workbooks, and a Teacher Guide supplies answers and clues. Levels K-6 available, but do a readiness test first - the test is included in the K-8 Student Testing Kit.
In Grade K: $29.70 ($27) 350g for each of the two Workbooks; Teacher Guide $88 ($80) 900g
In Grades 1-3: $33 ($30) 450g for each of the two workbooks in each grade level; Teacher Guides $99 ($90) 1.2kg each level

| But, is it Australian?
Is it imperative to use only Australian textbooks? We do not think so, for the same reason as anything (food, cars, computers, etc) is imported - it's supposed to be the best at its price. After all, books are just one tool the intelligent educator uses. Real life is another. As long as we use local terms when shopping, cooking, driving, or crafting, no harm is done by also learning "dime" and "mile." There is no need to sacrifice curriculum quality for skin-deep "relevance." Your total curriculum i s still Australian, even if some tools aren't. |

Addition Songs ![]()
CD 150g $27.50 ($25) Troxel
Don't make the mistake of drilling the "Times Tables" before addition is mastered! Multiplication is based on adding, and building on a poor base is a sure recipe for confusion. Addition Songs is a fun, effective way to get the facts in. Kit includes book with words to the songs and some pages of written practice.
Subtraction Songs ![]()
CD 150g $17.60 ($16) Troxel
Spend equal time drilling subtraction, to avoid confusion between addition and multiplication. Kit includes book with words to the songs and some pages of written practice.
Multiplication Songs ![]()
CD 150g $16.50 ($15) Troxel
Once the concept of multiplication has been taught, music can reduce the effort needed for memorization. This goes through the "times tables" twice each, echo fashion (answers left out the second time). The music is light and pleasant but some say the order is "wrong". Kit includes a book with the song words and some pages of written practice.
Division Songs ![]()
CD 150g $30.80 ($28) Troxel
Teaches division problems up to 144 ÷ 12 = 12. Learning division is important too, as it is not always easy to reverse the multiplication facts without practice.
