This guide to written expression describes the MEANING approach - after all, the purpose of writing is to communicate. The student has to learn only enough grammar to understand when his expression confuses, and what he can do to make it clear to readers. Use the book with secondary students (it will take about a month at ten minutes per day) and then as a trouble-shooter thereafter when errors are made.

Written by a master grammarian in 1869, and then slightly updated by the current publishers, this sturdy hardback book will provide insight into the finer points of our language. Originally used in Grade 4, but suitable for use by older students and as a general reference book.

A good vocabulary is basic to many thinking skills: limited word knowledge will practically prevent conceptual and analytical thought. All vocabulary extension is beneficial, but a consistent ten minutes per day, 4-5 days per week is best.
