Page 4: Early Years: Life Skills

Children aged approximately 3-8 learn very quickly, can memorize easily, are eager to please, and love to be involved in real life. However they have not yet developed a long-term memory, so there are special delightful ways to teach. It is fine to follow whims and take a seemingly haphazard approach as long as you have an overall theme - eg the wonders of God's world. Pre-schoolers can enjoy the full range of subjects at their level, but when they reach school age you could focus on phonics to ensur e that they learn to read well. Look for items marked [For Early] throughout this catalogue as well as on this page.

What Every Child Should Know Along the Way [Christian][For Early][For Middle][For Senior] 350g $29.70 ($27)
Teaching practical skills in every stage of life. A wonderful guide to everything non-academic you will want to teach: home economics, practical skills, character, shopping, etc. Also dynamic devotions, cultivating family unity, humble use of talents, manners and safety from the Bible.

Once long-term memory develops around age 8 to 10, you can rely on children remembering more all the time, and widen their horizons without as much repetition. The temptation is to try to do everything! Don't overload yourself or your children - choose something to do first and later choose other things. A key to keeping on is to keep sessions short and sweet - stop after 10 or 15 minutes, always on a positive note, and never lose your cool. That way you will all stay keen.
